To me the length of the boom is essentially irrelevant, provided it's long enough. To add a little perspective -- I'm curious about fitting a sail to...

So, to set up a main sail with the newer style boom really only requires that the foot length is correct for the distance between the beams -- ie just...

If the mast has a gooseneck fitting and rotator, it's likely a 5.2. I can look up the length if necessary. The 5.2 sails won't work very well on a 5...

If that doesn't work, a stainless rod is easy enough to come by.

The silicone on some of those fittings is just around the fitting to prevent water getting in. And that's good. It isn't separating the two metals, ...

I think your biggest concern with these mods is that you're also planning to use the boat in the surf. That will be extremely stressful (just go watc...

A P18 would be an excellent choice for getting started. Cheap, durable, easy, buoyant. A 5.5 isn't going to love 400 lbs, but it's not that big of...

If you're solo on a 5.5SL at 210, you should have a righting bag with you. At 200, it was often all I could do to get mine righted while using the ba...

I'd have said the 5.7 before you listed it, so def take a hard look at the 5.7. Make no mistake, though, it will be a beast that you have to tame.

At 120lbs, you might need two buckets just to right a hobie 16. IMHO you should focus on a Nacra 5.0 over anything else, for lots of reasons I'm too ...

Big boats to start with, especially the 20. You're not going to want to solo any of those 3 for the majority of your time on the water. I'm about 20...

I don't think anything's as quick as an H16, but a uni 5.5 would come close...no boom, no jib, and no spin, certainly saves time.

That being said the 5.5 Uni with a spin is a very versatile boat. I can and do, single hand it a LOT, the boat was originally a double handed sloop so...

Spinnaker isn't standard, or typical, on a 5.5 Uni (or a 5.5 SL).

Go with nicer line instead of bigger line. 5/16" salsa or phd work just fine for mainsheets. Don't go above 3/8"

The shock cord should be doubled up, with the bitter ends at the top of the tiller arm. I used 5/16" cord, and pull it tight, add a couple hog rings,...
