I am going to buy all new running rigging for the p-16 , and I was wondering If I could simplify things a little ( and save money)
This boat calls for 3/16, 1/4 5/32 5/16 and 3/8 line.
Many of these sizes are so close together why not just run 3/16 and 3/8 on everything?

Would that be fine, or bad idea?

I guess the question can be "Why NOT so many line sizes"

If you are thinking of buying a big roll of the two sizes to use for all your lines, remember that you also want to have different colors for different lines. Makes it a lot easier when you are shouting to the crew "Release the jib sheet!, NO, the blue one!".

So since you have to buy separate lines you might as well have the ideal size for each block set and cleat.

Good point.
Ill just buy a rigging kit and be done with it.
Any complaints about the salty dog line kits? Looks to be the best value.

That should get you going. Although APS ( a good source for line ) is having a clearance sale right now, you might find some nice line at a discount.

the salty dog kit comes with 1/4" for the rudder pulls i think?...3/16" works better. sta set is the budget boats best friend...color code(main/jib/travelor) makes it easier too in those "OH SH*T.." moments!

Ill call them when I order and see if theyll substitute 3/16 for the rudder lines.

I wont have an obscene amount of money in it, 350 for the boat and trailer, 100 for hardware replacement, 60 for a nice used tramp, and $130 for a line kit. 100 for hull repair

Boat was really well cared for up to the point it was left outside for a decade.

I cannot recommend the Salty Dog kit.. The line is lower quality than even the bottom of the line New England (Sta Set) and the price is very similar. I actually paid less for a full rig of Sta Set than the Salty Dog kit, and I was able to choose colors.

I have not bought the salt dog stuff but The Sta Set is nice. If you don't want to order it do you have West Marine close or another boating supply. Many carry the Sta Set. Sometimes you can get deals on remnant pieces that are long enough. Bur if APS is having a sale use the Salty Dog kit as a guide for length's and order what you need.

I am pretty sure I have 1/4 in my Rudders and they work pretty well. 3/16 is probably easier to string through them but wither way DO NOT SKIMP in the Rudder line. Get the best NO Stretch line you can.

Go though APS, best selection best service, especially for line. New England Sta-set and Samson Trophy Braid are perfect for all the lines on your boat when on a budget. Order the exact length you need from page 8 of the Nacra/Prindle Parts Cataloge listing here: http://www.kosailing.com/assets/brand_pdfs/catalog_4.pdf . If you have problems with that link PM me and I will e-mail it to you.

Marine store yes, hardware store no. You absolutely don't want to use hardware store poly line (even if it looks like high quality line, it's not). The last thing you need is a main sheet that will stretch while you are controlling the boat. Or halyards and rudder pulldowns that will double in length under high load. It's not worth it.
