Ok so I need to replace the wire halyard a on a P16. Out of three different masts not a one is perfect. The best one has at least on strand broken between the stop stop and the shackle. I would use it on one of the smaller lakes were you never to far from shore but not on any of the more open ones.
Murray's wants $76 and Salty Dog wants $49. I have some old ones that I can pull the shackles off of so I priced out all the other parts and cable from Salty Dog and I can get all the components for about $15 The plan is to take it down to West Marine or see if a friend will bring his swagging equipment to our sailing trip in couple weeks and put it together. I would be using the old one to measure the points to swag in the stops on the new wire.
I email Salty Dog and they said:
"One thing you have missed is the single shank balls required to make the halyard stops, These require a specialty roller swage machine and experience."
I have no idea what these are. can anyone enlighten me. All the ones I have look like they just have a copper compression stop swaged in on the cable including the one in the picture from Murrays.
Also Murrays says new halyard are just 3/16 rope. Were there some P16's that went to the hook and Ring like the P18. If So do you think I might just be better off to do that?
Anyone think you could just put a stopper knot in some 3/16 and hook that where the cable stop would go? Or would the knot weaken the rope to much or just plain wear out to fast?

Ok so I found what the Ball Stop is:
looks like it is a Hydraulic swagged stop. Funny Murrays more expensive Halyrad doesn't use those but I guess Salty Dog's $49 one does unless the guy was blowing smoke you know where. None of the ones off any of the masts I have use one of those

It's pretty common to have a broken strand or two where the wire halyard goes over the top rollers of mast. You may be too cautius in worrying about it. Not like the mast is going to come down--and if it breaks sail will probably jam a bit allowing you to get home. That's my experience. And I simply use my long handled crimper to put stops on. Never heard of rope halyards only for P-16's---maybe they were thinking of H-16's with comp tips where most of halyard is rope. Pete

My worry was mostly because it would likely be my kids sailing it and one of the sails this summer is a 20 mile or so 10 up 10 back. I'd hate for them to have trouble on their first solo long sail like this.
