Another rookie question. Hobie 16
I’m replacing my mast step that I broke as a rookie. When I ordered the replacement part, I also purchased a new 3 hole mast tang and a jib halyard pulley located near the bottom of the mast. The wheel was worn badly. The mast tang I have is a single hole which is very busy looking even with only one set of trapeze wires. I thought this would be a good time to replace these items at the same time. The mast plate “Kit” came with pop rivets. I think these are steel because it has some magnetic to it and is shiney. These pop rivets are 3/16” x ½”. My question is, when replacing the mast tang and jib halyard pulley, what type of pop rivets should I use? Should I find some like the mast plate ones I got? I’m thinking aluminum rivets would not be strong enough. I do have access to air and hand rivet guns but need to know what rivets are best for what I’m doing. Your advice, please. Thank you.

The 3/16 x 1/2 stainless ones would work for the tang and cheek block, too.....they're just a little longer (and probably pricier) than the application actually requires. I try to keep a handful of them in my box of spares...they fit a lot of places on most cats.

400 series stainless and monel alloy can be slightly magnetic. you should be all set...as rattlenhum says it's a good idea to have a few of various sizes in your parts box....
Be sure to seal everything you do with silicone. This will keep water out of the mast when you capsize, which is a major cause of going completely turtle.

Remember to dip the rivets in some sort of barrier coat before you pull them, especially if you are in salt water. It will prevent galvanic corrosion.

Don't forget to seal the mast rivets, to prevent water getting inside.

Also they make Rivet pockets, put them in first as with any pop rivet it is not sealed when installed the rivet cup with make sure it is sealed. HTH, R.
