Hey all,
I'd like to sew some windows into my H16 sails. From the pictures I've found, it looks like the window may be about 30" long by a foot tall. Is this about right? Or is bigger better?

Do you mean the main, jib or both? It's kind of subjective. When you sail the boat, take note of where your view is blocked and go from there. The jib window is more important obviously, and your view is affected by a few things like if you're on the trapeze flying a hull or even how tall you are. Since you're doing it yourself you have opportunity to get it just right. I've found a window in the main to be useless unless you're really flying a hull solo while on the wire but if I remember correctly, the boom on a H16 is pretty low so having a window there might not be a bad idea.

Both. Unfortunately this is the perfect time to put a window in, but not to sail it. So I may not get it perfect.

for the mainsail i like to have a human outline for my window and try my best to fall (jump) through that exact opening when i eventually capsize into my sail

I liked the human outline idea but I got lazy. Here is my jib:

Since you're showing pics of your kids...Here's mine, trying to match the radial panels of the jib window I was replacing. I think this window's too big, but it's what was original and destroyed:

Chuck, I'm glad you told me about the Omega machine with the 2" inches of space. Hard to jam that sail in, would have sucked on a smaller machine.

Main window. The transparency ends were cut out with a 1' diameter, and the height before sewing was 1'. That was the pattern I had for my sail bag that I made.

Telltales per the Hobie pic over at the Hobie forums:
