I repainted my Nacra over the winter. The boat had this rubber type non-skid along the edges for hiking out. It worked and would like to duplicate but unsure the product used. Suggestions greatly appreciated!

ckalousek, your cat is gorgeous.
Don't put that rubber stuff on it. It ages quickly and will look terrible.
Use something like this, which is clear, has good traction and will last:

http://www.murrays.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=40-2010&Category_Code=C-N&Store_Code=MS

Mask off the area in which you want traction and roll it on. Don't be afraid to go wider that you think you need. You may thank yourself later in a big blow.

All the new Nacra's, Infusion, Carbon 20 etc. come with a lot of grey soft deck cover made out of some kind of space age material. I asked Kirk at Key Sailing about it recently and he said it was available by the sheet. Don't know if it's something any Nacra dealer could get for you.

Now that I re-read your post I am wondering if you were asking about something that was on the side of your hulls for traction with your feet while on trapeze, or was it padding on top of the hulls for your bum while hiking out?

I can't get over how great your cat looks! What kind of paint did you use and how did you do the graphics?

The stuff on the Nacras is EVA Foam, same as what the midsole of your running shoes is made from. It's also used to make those non-slip tiles for kids playrooms etc. You can find it here are murray's http://www.murrays.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=41-2991&Category_Code=C-N&Store_Code=MS I have a couple of sheets I am going to put on my new Nacra 5.7.

However a boat that nice deserves something like what's on Dan Berger's A-Cat

I used this on my Supercat http://www.hydroturf.com/ you can buy it by the sheet in different styles and colors. It took me 2 sheets to do my boat. It is quite comfortable and provides really good traction when trapped out. Here's a close up picture of it.

BTW your 5.2 is SWEET!! Awesome paint job!!

I didn't realize the deck material on the Nacras was the same stuff (EVA Foam) that they sell as anti-fatigue matts at Harbor Freight, Costco etc.

The stuff sold as mats is twice as thick and cut in 24 inch squares with jigsaw puzzle type edges, so wouldn't work for decks, but I used it for lining the bottom of my trailer box and used the scraps for padding the mast support.

In the mat form it is really cheap, 48 square feet (6,912 square inches) for less than $30

Where the 3/16" thick stuff with the nice deep waffle cut is $65 for 1,800 square inches.

Take a look at what I've got on my Sol Cat next time you're at the beach. If you want some of that (with or without the grippy texture stuff, let me know. I bought a pint and used a tiny bit. I got it from an online epoxy company that is a tad... shall we say... off the wall. http://www.epoxyproducts.com

That guy doesn't sell the "liquid co-polymer rubber mastic" anymore.

Wow, that's the most retro site I've seen in years, kind of mid 90's Netscape. 😆

I almost expected dancing hamsters.

But... the epoxy has been as easy to work with as any I've used. And the rubber stuff I used for non-skid is quite grippy. Although with the rubber grit, sometimes crew that doesn't wear shorts complain it's not so comfortable. Next time I'll leave out the rubber grit where I sit. Anyway, it's needed on the sides more than the deck anyway.

I've also seen 1/8" recycled rubber tire subfloor sheeting. There were complaints that its *too* grippy, and you can't slide along the hobie's siderail when you sit on it anymore. It's on my righting pole. It's only downside is that its kinda hard to chamfer nicely.

Time to sail...

Thanks for the great comments! What was supposed to be a simple fix of leaks over the winter became a full on project. I knew the port hull leaked, so I took the top off the bow, only to find the internal bracing was cracked. That meant it was probably cracked internally starboard too. Fixed them both and put the tops back on.

I also ran a strip of carbon down both keels from the bow to the daggerboard trunk. Now the thing looked ugly, so the next step was to repaint.

I worked with my graphic designer at work to get a basic sizing of the hibiscus design. I know from watching too many motorcycle shows there is a way to print the graphic so it's easily removable. I also had traced the original deal on tracing paper as I couldn't find the correct decal. It took a long while, but http://x-tremewraps.com/ in Villa Park, IL could handle both the easy to remove stencil and producing the decal (which I wanted to have metal flake in the blue. It was cheaper to get a vinyl graphic than paint it on) from trace.

Because I was running out of time (summer had already started and the boat still needed to be painted and I didn't want to take the time to learn to spray the paint) I found a company that paints fire trucks and big rigs that could fit me in between projects. I had the paint (ppg car paint and clear coat. the boat doesn't sit in the water unless its being sailed, so no need to gel coat. Plus all the fancy expensive race boats use car/clear, so why not a 30 year old boat?) specially matched per paint chips I picked up at Lowes (couldn't use normal house paint). Dropped the boat off on a Friday, with the hibiscus stencils, paint, and a few basic instructions and let them go at it. The hibiscus are painted on and the Nacra 5.2 a vinyl decal.

After a 4 week delay waiting for the new tramp to show up, I finally got the boat out sailing. Next project is to figure out a better way to keep the rudders locked down. The Nacra system of old blows compared to the hobie system.

If time/money allows, maybe new sails with a hula girl or skull/bones. manufactures seem to think white is fast. It may be, but it's not as fun.

As my old roommate likes to say; sail fast, take chances, have fun.

Kiwi Grip!

I just did the fore deck on my fishing boat with it. Put it on with a notched trowel and then roll with the supplied nylon roller. You get a nice non slip surface that is comfortable on bare skin.

One quart would probably do 6 boats.
