I have seen some early eighties Nacra 5.2 sails from Skip Elliot that were still crisp and in great shape. And the Glaser Sails are awesome too!

A friend of mine has Whirlwind sails on his 5.5 SL. He was extremely pleased with Chip's customer service and the quality of the sails. They look fantastic.
To me, there are two major considerations:
1) Do you want 'Nacra' sails? If so go with Skip Elliot or Performance sails. I have Performance sails on my 5.8, and they are superb.
2) Price! How much do you want to pay? You will pay a premium for Performance Sails vs. Whirlwind. We will probably go Whirlwind next time, just based on value.
I am sure Gordon will chime in eventually, but here is an image of his Whirlwinds:

After you decide who you have to decide how.
Sail cloth Dacron, Pentex, Kelvar or others.
Square top or pin head. If square top you will need new battens.
Pre-bend or stock mast.
You can spend lots of money or stay close to stock. If your sail is wore out, a new stock on will make a big difference.
I would want one like this.

I would suggest that you pick two or three sail makers and call them to discuss all of the design and material options. Let them know what your objectives are. What level of performance are you looking for? How long do you expect the sail to last? Talk to a couple of guys and get some quotes.
Skip Elliot will probably be willing to spend a lot of time sharing information - your time will be well spent.
I would be interested to know what sort of information and prices you come up with. If you don't mind, send me a PM and let me know what you find.
