Wanting to start new regatta in 2014

Thinking of starting a new regatta for 2014 @ Juanas in Navarre , FL. ... Since the Round The Island has pretty much died away, I have been thinking of doing a Halfway Around The Island. It would start gulf side @ Navarre pier (Grand Prix start ) and end @ Juanas on Sat. Then Buoys on Sunday.. That is the gist of it. All input and ideas are welcome. Name , help, time of year etc... Please give all input..
Thanks, Doug Klem Pensacola, Fl.
I'd be in on that for sure. What about the weekend before or after the Juana's good time regatta?
Another hot spot would be ocean springs MS. I'll keep my eyes peeled on this thread to see how it develops but i can usually get 3-4 boats from my area to come down. We do need more regattas!

The weekend before is out because there is still to many tourists . The summer months could be more costly for people who have to travel a long way. I wish there was some more input about the time of year. Also I don't want to drop it on another regatta date.
What about an open class regatta in early spring? There's lots of us that will have cabin fever come april? as long as air temps are over 70*, fairly common on the gulf coast? What dates do you suggest? I'm going to the Juana's regatta every year no matter what. A group of us do. The Hobie mid winters in OSYC was fun too. Navarre to Ocean Springs is a great costal area.

Poor Planning , Late notice of race , I spent 2-3 weeks just trying to get a date for it this year and after finally getting it I was so frustrated I said forget it. But that is neither here nor there. I would like the focus to be on something new and I believe a shorter distance race will bring more new sailors who need the experience but feel the RTI is a bit more than they would comfortable with

It's my opinion that RTI offered a very unique opportunity to start a 100 mile race and have it end at the same spot. This is something that I cannot race locally, or that I know of a comparable alternative in the southeast. Last years RTI had the usual problems. However the weather was also forecasted to be terrible, which is what prevented me from pulling the trigger on making the trip down. I wouldn't travel 500 miles for the proposed race, even though it sounds fun, it's something more easily found other places.
I would suggest taking the RTI format, giving it fresh race management and promotion. Moving it to the fall/winter and I think you would again have a great turnout.
Most of the people I have talked to that raced it in the past placed their biggest complaints on race management.
