sweet looking solcat on craigslist

sounds too cheap

I looked at the photos on craigslist, and if I lived in any where near the boat it would already be in my yard. People pay $350-400 for a decent trailer alone, $300-500 for sails, $200-300 for rudder assembly, $250 for a mast. This is one of the harder boats to find parts for. You could part the boat out and double your money There are some great deals out there (and this could be a great boat) and you won't have to worry about someone who thinks that it's to cheap buying it ahead of you.

I have found in this area people have no idea what they have a lot of the time as evidenced by the listing as a "catamaran sailboat." I just, I'll say "rescued" an 81 hobie 18 in very good condition. It is I will say missing the rudder assemblie and daggerboards but the sails and hulls are in excellent condition. I paid 50 dollars for it and yes it has a title. The boy scout camp just dissolved their sailing program. A lot of people inherit or are given these boats and have no idea what to do with them so they put them on the market with no idea of value. I posted it here because I thought there might be a solcta lover in the area who was intersted. There was one in Wichita KS last month when I was looking for a dolphin for my kids and he wanted only 700 for it as he had a hard time finding parts didn't want to mess with it.

Because the Solcat is not a very popular boat the price can be very low compared to the same boat in a nacra, hobie or prindle. I have had one for several years and love it. it is fast, stable and parts can be found. I have had more trouble finding parts for my nacra 5.2 then for my solcat. From the photo it looks like a nice boat. Think of all the boat you will get for the money. If you buy the boat send me an e-mail and I can send you the manual and lot of other info.

I just bought a Solcat that was in the Milwaukee craigslist for $500. I couldn't find the link to the ad in the original post so I don't know if it's the same one you were talking about. The boat seems to be in pretty good shape. The fiberglass is solid although pretty chalky but it polishes up nicely with rubbing compound. The sails are still crispy, and the trailer is like new. The black anodised mast and cross-beams are nicked up pretty good and I'm trying to figure out a way to paint them (any suggestions????).
Maybe the Solcat is uncommon and hard to get parts for, but for $500 I've got a 18' cat to zoom around on! It's going to be a long winter waiting for sailing season to start again.

Hey Texas, that sounds like a great deal to me. I love my Solcat and learn something new about it everytime i take it out. Just had her out Sunday w/ a buddy. it was a blast! winds were ~15 mph and we were flying - at least thats how it felt. 🙂
As far as painting the crossbeams and mast - im just going to use black spray paint on mine...not the cheap stuff, but the good stuff u can get at your local paint supply (sorry cant find the thread that I ran accross that had the name of the stuff).

Jeff, Its done! thats the best part 😉 Ya it was a pain - especially the inside epoxy/glassing - that was no fun! After flipping it over and being able to actually SEE what I was working on it went smoother (litterally). I'll post a few pics if I can remember how to do that.
I just repaired the damage from the stump or whatever it was ... i'll be doing a complete bottom job this fall.

Deadcat, not sure about the one your looking for... but from what ive learned in researching my Solcat, Sol Cats were made in 15ft, 18, and 20ft lengths. I have the 18 and its big, but FUN and FAST - so i wouldnt go to a 15... though I imagine it's a lot simpler to solo then my 18 - i pretty much have to have help stepping the mast.

Just my 2 cents 🙂

another sweet solcat

There are two SolCat 18s available in this area (Portland Metro, Oregon). I may soon put mine up too. I haven't found them to be all that rare. Parts...don't know.
