So I am a long time recreational sailor interested in participating in a regatta or two. I have read the rules of Sailing and racing a couple of times. They are far from ingrained. Are there any computer based training and or games/ simulators that are good for practice? I tried a few app but it was real basic.

If it is realistic enough maybe it will help get me through a loooong land based winter!

Better to just familiarize yourself with the basic general rules - starboard vs. port, clear ahead vs. clear astern, etc. and then go out and start racing. Do a regatta, review the rule book, discuss with other sailors, repeat.

There are a lot of nuances to the rules that you are not likely to appreciate until you actually get out there and start racing.

Start with this

1. Don't hit other boats. Collisions are slow and arguments are slower.
2. Keep out of the way of boats in front of you.
3. Port tack boats usually have to stay out of the way of everyone else.
4. Windward boats must stay away from leeward boats.
5. The inside boat gets to go round the mark first.
6. Don't hit marks. Doing circles is slow.
7. Don't hit the committee boat. First, it is a mark (see Rule 6) and second, it really makes them mad.
8. Nothing good ever happens on a layline.
9. The port tack layline is a very ugly place.
10. Control your own destiny: stay out of the Protest Room. Protest Committees are uncontrollable: with a 100% solid case, you have a 50% chance of being DSQ.

I think #10 is meant for a potential protestee. Said another way; when in doubt, spin.

www.sailX.com is a pretty fun way to brush up on some rules and practice sailing.

@jaybird

"Start with this: 1. Don't hit other boats."

That cracked me up. 😆
As the direct recipient of just such an encounter, I can affirm that's a good place to start.

+1 for http://game.finckh.net/indexe.htm

Any web search will yield some results and searching could take up most of the looong land based winter (please post your results).

These are just some. There are others.

adding one:
When you hit a mark, don't make your penalty turns at the mark where 20 other boats are rounding. (It wasn't me!!)

Ted

No worries. If you really mess up you'll usually know from the high volume of yelling coming from the other boat..

it's also a good idea to go crew with a captain who knows what he is doing.
the training and tips can be very useful
