Creative HIking strap Padding?

Has anyone here found or came up with any alternatives for a Hiking strap cover similar to:
I am sure the Murrays one is great but I'm all ready over budget on my boat this season and am looking for DIY or other CHEAP alternatives.
For instance anyone know where you can get remnant noepreen material?

You know I bet you could do the same thing with pool noodles, they would have the advantage of being UV proof and very cheap. I wonder if you could slit the noodles, then glue them closed again with epoxy?

Closed cell black pipe insulation from your local Lowe's/Home Depot (not the cheap stuff). It is the same stuff and has a peel and stick cover down the slot.
