For the more experienced cat sailing guys, I'm sure its not a terribly inspiring project/design. However, for the unwashed masses… It might not be so bad.
I think I get it. Its a catchy stepping stone to more interesting and rewarding platforms.
Will it work? That remains to be seen. I sure hope its effective. I for one would like a few more boats out there on the course with me 5 or 10 years from now.

The new boat will be the first in a series of special edition ASA/Hobie catamarans designed with the dual
purpose of making it easy to learn as well as appealing to those youth and young adults attracted to the speed and performance of multihulls. The boats will be offered by Hobie Cat sailboat dealers worldwide starting in
2014 concurrent with the ASA’s rollout of its new educational program featuring the new boat. “As with any sport, there always needs to be massive efforts by our industry to get new participation into sailing,” commented Dan. “Our new partnership with ASA is Hobie’s contribution to this endeavor. Our whole team is enthused about sharing our passion for sailing.”
“Sailing’s image got a dramatic face lift during the recent America’s Cup competition in San Francisco. With foiling catamarans and global TV exposure it created an incredible opportunity to widen the sport’s reach at its very foundation -the new sailor. Now, Hobie and ASA are poised to further broaden the impact of the America’s Cup in a very fundamental way – by growing the sport,” noted two-time America’s Cup winner, Peter Isler, co- founder of ASA and a member of the ASA’s Board of Directors.
The education arm of the partnership will be a new educational program that will be featured at ASA schools. It still sounds like they are just dressing up a wave/T2/Getaway. Probably great marketing but a bit of a let down after you see a foiling cat (or you sail on an F18).

Anything that captures any of America's Cup excitement to get new people into sailing is a HUGE plus! Once these people are sailing and excited for a few years they'll sell the black Wave's ect and get more modern high tech boats and progress into racing. Sure, they're gimmicky, but hey, they "look" cool and will definitely be noticed and attract attention anywhere they're sailing 😛
The whole idea is to make cat sailing interesting and desirable again for youths and for those wanting to try a multi hull from a mono, which i think is great!
Special low/no finance payment plans with a club join could be good too, not to mention support of these new sailors from the guys out there that don't like Hobie's ( But might like to see some more on the water to race against 😉 NACRA guys ~ you know who you are! )
