Dave, EdChris and all you other Canadians. I need some help. I've got several trips to Canada this summer/fall and I'm looking for a prepaid data/talk/text package (or similar option) to use on an unlocked GSM phone. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I've used Virgin when traveling to UK and have been happy with the results. I have no clue who to go with in Canada.

Where are you going? Toronto/Ottawa/Montreal region will have more options, than the rest of the Country.

Rogers and Telus are good choices. Although I use my provincial provider here, I believe they are hooked up with Bell outside of Manitoba.

Check out Bell, Telus and Rogers. All should have good coverage there.

I just got back from a million degrees in Shanghai. Virgin also functions up here. In B.C. Telus is the biggest player.
Who are you using now? Some of the bigger players will give you a temporary travelers plan in other countries, you use your own phone.
Unlocked is not nearly as common here as other countries. In addition, not all the major carriers use the same frequencies, & so not all phones work with all carriers. I can't remember offhand which major uses the old TDM(time division multiple) & it is not compatible with the newer tech.
Another option if you can't get a deal from your carrier is to just go to a drugstore & buy a prepaid phone.
I'm not very savvy on phone technology, I gave mine to my wife a year ago...keeps work from finding me when I want to ski or sail! I'll make some inquiries tomorrow & get back to you. Headed to the lakehouse for 10 days.

This can't be right. So far I haven't found a prepaid that includes data. Huh? What's with that?

Dunno, they do smoke a LOT of weed in BC. Maybe they are just so mellow they don't need e-mail?

Philip, I have some stuff for you, made some inquiries with the providers. We pay to much for data, as soon as I'm Prime Minister, I'll change that, until then...
Send me an email addy via PM. I'll send you a word doc, with links etc.

I sent you a fairly lengthy PM, let meknow if it doesn't come through, or the links don't show up. I could email the Word doc to you.
Enjoy your trips, bring a wetsuit if you intend to sail on the Wet Coast, water is like 'Frisco. Many of the Inland lakes get quite warm, though not Gulf Coast warm
