I just saw an ad for a prindle 18. What is your opinion about buying a boat for parts to use and to sell? Does it have to be purchased very cheap? Thanks Pete

If the price is right and you have storage space and time, it can be worth it.

i have a spare boat in my backyard that came with everything but the mast and stays (i split it with a friend who wanted the sails, trailer and rig).

my garage is full of extra rudders, centerboards, castings, old mains, jibs, spins etc

It can be a good idea. Buying individual parts adds up quick. It really helps keep you on the water when you already have a replacement for everything, especially things like sails. Just make sure it has good usable parts, replacing a broken part with one that is about to break is not really a solution.

If you have the room and have either no wife or a very tolerant wife it is a great idea, especially with a boat like the P18 that is relatively rare.
Until recently my sailing stuff has pretty much been self funded from doing this. I'll buy a boat, get what I need and sell the rest.
BUT, if you want to actually sell stuff you have to price it right, a lot of people ask too much for things and they just sit. I just try to get my money back and help out some fellow sailors in need with good pricing. NOT something that you do to get rich or try to make high margins on.

Cez, I agree. I told the guy just to keep me in mind if doesn't sell it in a reasonable time. Told him I hope he sells it to a sailor, but I would be interested for its parts value if he is willing to let it go for a bit less.
