Yes Bob,, That would be correct and AC is a likely overnight site as others along the way like Long Beach Island or Island Beach for that matter. It will be a function of available wind on those days and part of that process will be posting that the day before the race and race day. So having spots further up the coast might make good sense as fail safes for wind conditions. Chase crews on the ground are important also for those that need to bail out for whatever reason.

People come ashore because they are hurt/the boat is damaged/there is no wind/they are lost. The chase vehicles would transport people for medical aid/boat parts, and carry a marine VHF radio, cell phone and a first aid kit.
You might have to clearly define what kind of assistance the chase crews can give out over the radio, e.g. NOT telling who is in what place or locations of the other boats.
I am excited about this race.
To enter a race thats's just over 2500 miles away, I may need a second spare for the trailer. 😀

Never sailed competitively and never anywhere near that distance but hey this sounds like it might be a great inspiration. Why the 320lb rule? Been sailing a 16 off the beach in Sea Isle, NJ for about 25 years. That's between A/C and Cape May. Thanks for trying to get this started.

Reason for upping the minimum weight on 16's , people are more inclined to sail with 2 adults this way, most 16 racers sail with kids as crew to be close to the 285 minimum class weight .. They used the 330 weight in the Worrell 1000 . We are trying to see how many people might be interested,spread the word ..

Hi all, Stay tuned it looks like this regatta is coming together rather nicely. Lots of work to do yet but folks are pulling together to make this a great annual event. Stay Tuned.

Awesome. Is the plan for everyone to stay in the same area for the night?
I would love to sail all the way up to Lavallette so my crew and I can stay at our place there.... but if everybody is camping/staying in the same hotel - that would probably be a blast!

Again - we're not really going to try to win - we just want to be in it...

Isn't that an expensive resort area that the overnight stop rooms would need to be booked well in advance? Doesn't sound like a place where competitors could camp on the beach even if they carried the gear for that. I must be missing something.

NJ ain't Baja - unfortunately.

Camping on the beach in NJ is really scarce - some places you aren't allowed on the beach after midnight and can't even have a fire.
I assume we will require special clearance for us to just land our boats and beach them overnight.

This is a race I'd be interested in doing but there are a lot of logistics. Providing a ground crew sounds great, if all that crew is doing is moving a trailer and cheering the team (hopefully). What happens when you have an injured sailor in leg 1, or have a breakdown? The list of people I'd want on my ground crew is pretty darn short; the flip side is I'd have a darn hard time convincing those people to fly to NJ for a weekend of ground crew. Add in the hassle of a stop, cost associated etc. and this gets more difficult to add to our calendar. Entice us with a casino sponsor 🙂

I'd score the race on total elapsed time, sort out the stop for the slower boats but we'll aim for a straight shot. Yes 136 miles is a serious distance, but hopefully for most of that you have beach you can stop on if you break and we can manage >17kts in the right conditions for an 8 hour day on the water.

Thank you for proposing this and working on the organization. We'll drum up support when things are a little more formalized.

Those are the logistical issues we are working out as this begins to unfold. Yes it is a two day race with a stay over which would most likely be in the Island Beach area which is a State Park so those folks are on the schedule to talk with. Wind conditions are favorable off the coast this time of year but we would need alternate plans (TBD). There is also a local hotel in walking distance that we are talking with and local food services. So like I said, George and his group are getting the logistics worked out. Stay tuned, you worry about finishing the race and we will get the details ironed out.

The hotel is at the entrance to Island Beach and yes it is Ocean side with a big beach area.
Like I said it is all the logistics are being worked out. In a month or two it should all come together.

Logistics may be simplified, we may leave from our club, Atlantic Highlands sail half way down the coast to Long beach Island. Spend the night and sail back to Atlantic Highlands I think this would make trailering ground crews ETC a lot easier .. I have talked to several Hotels and they would be eager to have the event land on their beach ... Date I am looking for is weekend after Labor day 2014 .. Wind is good water still warm , its off season making emergency beaching easier, rooms are much cheaper...More info will follow ..What I am looking for now,is numbers how many people are serious about doing this ??

Sounds good to me!!! It certainly would be a rather long drive to the right coast. I'd get a great rating with my Dart, too!!! The more wind, the better!!! Sounds like an awesome idea. I'm definitely interested and I had actually been tossing a similar idea around with one of my fellow Hobie racers not too long ago. I think after Labor Day is the best time for sure. No life guards to deal with, a good chance of breeze, and the water's still warm. Definitely camping on the beach would be out. I don't know of any town in NJ that allows camping on the beach. But the advantage of doing the race after labor day is that hotel and rental rates would drop significantly. The half way point would likely be somewhere on LBI. I think the biggest issue would be beach access for getting boats on and off, but again, the towns tend to be much more lax about vehicles on the beach after Labor Day. The other issue of course is the weather. It would probably be best to have some alternate starting and finishing ponits in the event that the wind speed or direction doesn't cooperate.

Anway, sounds cool Please keep us posted and you should probably let the local Hobie guys (Div 11) know when the plans come together.

Div 11 Guys are already chatting it up . Started this before 16 nationals, Mark Santorelli Div who was RC for nationals is also on board, along with some other world class sailors .. Keep it going I am looking for input on what race idea people would like to see. The Whole coast sail or the above mentioned, I do appreciate everyone's ideas and opinions .

I like DartMana- in the Polynesian culture mana means "a sacred impersonal force existing in the universe."
The fact that your Dart has survived three decades of you thrashing it offshore is clearly evidence of a supernatural force watching over you.
The fact that you have hidden three other Darts from you wife for so long is icing on this supernatural cake.

That sounds like a much better/easier plan logistically. I like distance races where you sail there one day and back the next, all the fun much less hassle.

Be aware the F16 Worlds are in Newport June 23rd-29th of 2014. Not an issue for the Hobie sailors but it might be prudent to avoid these dates as a number of top crews in the New England area may elect to sail the Worlds instead of a distance race (us included).
